Getting free publicity

You don’t need to fork out pots of money to advertise your club in the local press in your quest to attract new members.

A well structured press article will have much more impact and reach a wide and diverse number of people - and what’s more it’s free!

This article in the Belfast Telegraph is a perfect example of the impact you can achieve if you use the media correctly because it manages to get its message across by following some fundamental rules:

  • Offer the right photos – younger faces, action shots – not a chain, tie or cheque in sight
  • Use a strong message - We want new people to join and breathe new life and ideas into the club
  • Be honest – state that people often perceive Rotary as ‘staid and stuffy’ but state that Rotary is changing. Our clubs are all different and have their own personality and we want men and women of all ages to join
  • Say a bit about Rotary and your club – mentioning the organisation's history (Rotary’s rich heritage is important) as well as what charitable work your club does in the local area and what Rotary does internationally
  • Include a call to action – join Rotary!
  • Tell them how - direct them to a website or a contact number

Why not try to sell in a similar feature to your local paper.

Tell the editor or journalist that Rotary is changing, that you can help dispel the myths about the organisation; that your club is looking for new blood; that you can provide the paper with photos and examples of how you have helped the local community (perhaps even offer an interview with an individual or a charity you have helped).
