ShelterBox and Hurricane Ida

SB Malawi Cyclone Idai 2019It’s been 4 weeks since Cyclone Idai on 14 March tore through Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe, leaving a long trail of destruction washing away homes and destroying livelihoods. Floods have affected almost 1 million Malawians and forced at least 125,000 from their homes. Families who’ve seen their homes swept away are showing great resilience and strength, building temporary shelters with the few materials they could salvage.

ShelterBox has visited several villages and camps within the Chikwawa district in southern Malawi. One of the villages was completely swamped by the flooding with homes flattened and buried in mud, forcing the whole community to abandon it. The flooding has also devastated livelihoods; most people were making a living through farming, but all of their crops have been destroyed. Reaching out to Rotary Clubs they have previously worked with in District 9210 they are working with Habitat for Humanity, emergency shelter kits and other essential items such as kitchen sets, mosquito nets and water filters have now arrived in the country and will be distributed shortly.
