Rotary Club of Belfast

Fighting Words

IMG 1546.2Guest speaker Geraldine Wilkins, a volunteer for Fighting Words Belfast, in address to the Club Monday 10 December noted that Fighting Words Belfast is the new creative writing project for children and young people in Northern Ireland based in Skainos Centre Newtownards Road. They work with children from kindergarten to teenagers aiming to unlock creativity and inspire imagination, using storytelling to encourage self-expression, build creative confidence and foster a love of literature in all who visit. They run free workshops for primary and secondary school groups, during which the students work to create a piece of writing unique to them. Their programmes and workshops are delivered mainly by volunteer writing tutors who spark imagination and draw the story out. They have also found that this helps children who have difficulty with spelling and pronunciation. She concluded her well received address noting that they are always looking for volunteers and funding!
